The Highlands occupies the northeast corner of Pompano Beach in 33062, bounded roughly by Federal Highway, the Hillsboro Canal and the Intracoastal. It is the practical alternative for buyers who want to be a short drive from Lighthouse Point and the Hillsboro Inlet without paying Lighthouse Point or Hillsboro Beach prices.

Housing stock is largely 1950s and 60s concrete-block ranches on generous lots, and the last decade has turned over a large share of them: new roofs, impact glass, opened-up floor plans, pools. Because renovation quality varies enormously street to street, two homes of the same square footage can be a million dollars apart here, and the difference is almost always in the roof, the windows and the mechanicals.

Most of the Highlands is dry lot, with waterfront limited to the canals along the eastern edge. If dockage is a requirement, the neighboring Isles of Pompano and Lighthouse Point carry far more of it; if you want a solid house, a big yard and money left over for the boat slip elsewhere, the Highlands is where that math works.

The beach is a five-minute drive, and Pompano's redeveloped pier district, the Fisherman's Wharf area and the new restaurants along Atlantic Boulevard have changed the character of this end of the city considerably in the last several years.
